Growing up, the only pet I ever had was a turtle.
So I was wholly unprepared for the energy, for the intensity of the gaze, for the sheer attitude, when we finally brought two kittens home from the pound. It was August 2010.
I couldn't stop watching them. So I started painting them.
Here, five years later, on the eve of turning sixty, are explorations of that single subject, as paintings in oil, primarily on canvas.
I translate these creatures using color, texture, collage and abstraction.
Zia and Zorro, the cats. Their animal genius teaches me humanity.
