Each year students are surveyed to learn their feelings regarding the
importance of hall choice over roommate requests. The hall usually
wins over a friend, and Ranville adjusts the rules attempting to
reflect this perception the following year. It becomes the delayed
broad brush-stroke with the highest penalty. Many fine-brush strokes
are also involved to minimize age differences, separate students with
conflicting music tastes and study habits, with smaller impact on the
overall score. The challenge of setting these values is discussed in
Section 4.1.1.
